TFT displays - characteristics, types, application

Publish date 2021-02-28
This applies to all aspects of our life - cars, household appliances, medicine and RTV devices. We can see how the quality of these mechanisms has improved. The devices work faster, quieter and with greater efficiency. Speaking of the topic of "seeing". Displays can be the best example of development. At the beginning they were found only on TV sets, now they accompany us practically every step of the way. The refrigerator shows on the built-in display that you need to buy milk. We can work on a computer in all lighting conditions. Televisions provide picture quality that was part of science fiction books just twenty years ago. This is possible thanks to TFT technology. Today's article will focus on displays based on this technology.

What is TFT?

Generally, TFT (from English Thin-Film Transistor) is a type of field effect transistor that is mainly used in color liquid crystal displays. The display, which uses TFT (TFT LCD) technology, has much better parameters than other LCD displays. This is due to the fact that active matrices are used in them. They are called TFT matrices. So where do the better parameters of these displays come from? The TFT transistors used in these matrices mean that each pixel is assigned as many as four separate transistors. For comparison: in other displays, one transistor is responsible for one row of pixels. That is why the image displayed on such a screen is clearer, more detailed and has a higher resolution.

Types of TFT matrices

A number of different types of TFT matrices are used in liquid crystal displays. Below we present a few and a handful of the most important information: IPS (in-plane switching): characterized by the most natural color reproduction; they display white sensationally, have very good durability; MVA (multi-domain vertical alignment): excellent viewing angles, great color reproduction and very good image sharpness, have a slightly slower response time than TN, but better than IPS matrices; PVA (patterned vertical alignment): short response time, wide viewing angles, high contrast, relatively low brightness; TN (twisted nematic): good price, great response time, but significantly weaker color reproduction; There are also: AFFS (advanced fringe field switching) ASV (advanced super view) PLS (plane line switching)

Application

Due to the fact that TFT displays are of fantastic quality, manufacturers like to use them in their products. They are used in high-quality laptops and computer monitors. Thin televisions, which display the image is breathtaking, are also equipped with these matrices. TFT displays are also used in industry. They are the perfect solution as a screen in machines requiring precise control. Found in ATMs, parcel machines and ticket machines. The ever faster developing technologies using TFT will soon make us meet with these matrices everywhere.
